　まず大切なのは人々の発想を変えることです。データセンターについて人が信じていたのは、データセンターは寒くなくてはいけない。人間が震えるほどの寒さが必要である。そして、気温が低い方がハードウェアの信頼性が上がるという常識です。

　ところが、自ら実験をし、ハードウェアベンダーとも一緒になって研究を行ってきた結果、それは決して真実ではないということがわかった。高温でもハードを運用することができる。ほとんど冷却をしなくても障害が抑えられる。実は、私のチームのメンバーが、サーバーを何台かテントの中に入れて稼働させてみた。雨はしのげるが、それ以外の気象状況の影響は受けるという状態です。実験をしたのは、シアトルですから、それほど気温は上がりませんが、それでもセ氏30度程度で稼働させても問題はないということがわかりました。

　こうした経験をもとに、高温になるアフリカのサハラ砂漠でも動かすことができるか、湿度が高いシンガポールでも動かすことができるか、そうしたところに研究テーマを置いています。
